When mental health becomes overwhelming, it’s not always easy to know what kind of help you need. Both 911 and mental health hotlines offer support — they’re just meant for different levels of crisis. Here’s a simple guide to help you choose the safest option.

Call 911 for a Mental Health Emergency

Dial 911 when someone’s safety is at immediate risk. Emergency services should be involved when the situation is urgent and cannot wait.

  • You or someone else is in immediate danger of self-harm or suicide
  • There is a suicide attempt in progress
  • Someone is threatening violence or cannot control their actions
  • Mental health symptoms are causing dangerous behavior (e.g., wandering into traffic, not recognizing danger)
  • A person is experiencing a medical emergency related to mental health (e.g., overdose, severe self-injury, hallucinations causing unsafe behavior)

If someone might get seriously hurt right now, call 911. Safety comes first.

Call a Mental Health Hotline When You Need Support — Not Emergency Rescue

Hotlines are for emotional support and guidance when the situation is serious but not immediately life-threatening.

Call a hotline if:

  • You’re having suicidal thoughts, but no plan, no intent, and you are safe right now
  • You’re overwhelmed, anxious, depressed, or having a panic attack
  • You feel alone and need someone trained to talk to
  • You’re worried about a loved one’s mental health and want guidance
  • You need coping strategies, resources, or next steps

Hotline counselors listen without judgment, offer support, and help calm the crisis.
